Sailing Royalty in the Yard
Famous boats occasionally come through the yard for anything from bottom paint on up. Persephone is one of those boats — Hull number 1 of the trend setting Cal 40. The vintage Bill Lapworth-designed boat, was built by Jensen Marine in 1963.
The boat's design was radical at the time, significantly lighter and with a hull shape that allowed for surfing waves. It's still a popular design some 60 years later. A Cal 40 placed first overall in the 2025 Transpac race to Hawaii.
Persephone is in the yard for major restoration — her present owner, Bill Rus, plans to get her back to racing shape. Bill is well aware he has tall deck shoes to fill. Persephone's previous owners include three-time America's Cup winner Dennis Conner.
